What the elastic layer actually does
A stone hitting bare glass concentrates its energy into a point smaller than a grain of rice, and glass answers that by cracking. SkyPlex PPF puts roughly 190 μm of highly elastic shape-memory polymer above the glass. The layer deforms under the strike, spreads the load across a wider area and returns to shape.
The numbers behind that behaviour are elongation at break above 100% and a maximum load above 6000 gf per ASTM D 882 — the film stretches rather than tears. Above it sits a self-healing top coat: light surface marks close up on their own.
Because the film is elastic, it conforms to windshield curvature without a heat gun. That removes the step where most installation defects appear and makes the result repeatable across a workshop.

SkyPlex PPF questions
Does SkyPlex PPF need a heat gun?
No. The elastic layer conforms to curved glass without thermoforming, which is the main difference from working with traditional TPU windshield films.
What does self-healing cover?
Light surface marks — swirl and fine scratching in the top coat. It is not a repair for impact damage that has reached the glass.
Does it yellow like older TPU films?
Yellowing index stays below 2 per ASTM D 1925, with UV rejection above 95%. The formulation is specifically built to resist the yellowing seen on traditional TPU.
Which vehicles is it for?
All types. Selection is driven by road conditions rather than vehicle class — PPF is the choice where gravel and stone chips are the main threat.
